Total Body Workout in One Exercise?

Ever heard of a burpee?  Probably not.  A burpee is somewhat of a combo pushup and jump squat in one movement.  A purist might say it is not really one exercise but we think it is.  Either way, burpees are great for conditioning and building power.  They are a perfect when you’re travelling or simply do not have space and time to do any other routines.  We also like to do them as a break from normal total body workouts.

So what is this magical exercise and how do you perform one?

  1. Start in a squat position with your hands on the floor in front of your body.
  2. Kick your feet back to a pushup position.
  3. Perform one pushup.
  4. Kick your feet back to a squat position.
  5. Do a jumping squat by leaping as high up into the air as possible.

Try to aim for 10-15 reps in a 30 second period.  A decent YouTube video can be found here.

One note – this exercise can be hard on the joints, specifically your wrists.  Emphasize smooth transitions to lessen the impact.  If you are really worried about the impact on your body, you could do a set of pushups immediately followed by a set of jump squats.
